An official statement from the Ontario’s Ministry of Education has confirmed that its website was compromised and thousands of emails were leaked via “unauthorized access.” The statement added that an investigation has started to look into the matter after the stolen email addresses were published online. The statement confirmed that the government learned about the 5,000 leaked email addresses, belonging to those who contacted the Ministry of Education through its workshop opportunities online, on March 5.

Furthermore, the ministry revealed that the list of email addresses was posted to a text-storing and sharing website, but has since been taken down. It was insisted that no other information, like names or passwords, was improperly accessed. The statement alleged that “the Ministry immediately took down its website and launched an investigation into this matter and is working to ensure this situation does not happen again.”

Even though a government spokesperson assured that there is no indication that other Ontario government networks are at risk, it has still taken down the website of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities “as a precautionary measure.” Reports confirm that both websites are still offline more than a week after the government learned of the leak, however the government aims to have both websites running early next week. According to the government’s statement, both the Ontario Provincial Police and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario have been notified of the incident.
