The Winnipeg Police Service has publicly unveiled its decision on Tuesday to not charge the two officers who had contact with Tina Fontaine last summer before her disappearance and death. According to the police department, the Crown informed them in December that no charges would be laid against the two officers who encountered the 15-year-old on Aug. 8, i.e. when she was a missing person, but failed to detain her. Shortly after the incident, and Fontaine’s body was found wrapped in a plastic and pulled from the Red River.

Apparently, Manitoba Justice decided not to lay charges almost three months ago but police waited until Monday to make that information public. Police revealed on Monday that one of the two officers is now suspended without pay, whereas the other remains on administrative leave. According to a statement by Tina's great aunt and godmother, Thelma Favel, on Tuesday, "my baby might still be alive today if they just did their job. They did run her name through the system, because I was told that by the chief investigator that they did run her name through, but they just let her go even though she was intoxicated." She said that "they should have just fired them on the spot.”

Whereas another woman whose niece Tanya Nepinak is among Canada's missing and murdered aboriginal women, Susan Caribou, also stressed that police should have informed the public as soon as they had the news. Caribou pointed out that "they always keep secrets when it comes to the police," whereas "they should be letting people know. Everybody was wondering, what would happen with the officers? If it was someone else, I'm sure they would have charged that person.”
