The veteran Conservative MP for Saint Boniface-Saint Vital, Shelly Glover, has announced her decision not to seek reelection. The police officer turned politician and senior Manitoba cabinet minister has finally decided to retire from political since being first elected as MP in 2008.

The Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages was a Winnipeg Police Service officer before jumping into federal politics. In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, Glover explained that family health issues have prompted her decision not to seek re-election. She alleged that “this past 18 months has been particularly difficult for me and my family as we have dealt with some very serious health issues while I was away from home. As their wife, mother and grandmother (with a second grandchild on the way), my family is very grateful that I am coming home.”

In addition to explaining the reasons of her decision, Glover highlighted numerous accomplishments during her time in Ottawa. She discussed the federal law limiting a judge’s discretion in giving offenders credit for incarceration prior to sentencing, along with Victims Bill of Rights to give victims a greater role in the criminal justice system. Glover mentioned that “as a police officer, I had seen firsthand the need to improve the laws in order to give law enforcement officers the tools they need to help others and to improve safety and security across the country.”
