A downtown Winnipeg hotel frequented by hundreds of toddlers and teens under the province’s Child and Family Services has now been abandoned. The hotel housed 15-year-old Tina Fontaine before she ran away last August and was later found dead in the Red River. The same hotel also housed a girl viciously attacked last week and had to be put into a medically induced coma. The latest attack has finally made CFS to stop using the hotel.

At the same time, the Manitoba government has also reached its deadline to stop using hotels everywhere to house children under the care of protective services. Speaking about these changes, those who’ve grown up in this environment have stressed that it’s already too late for them.

Heather, who was taken into CFS at the age of seven, stated that “when I was 12 years old I started working the sex trade” because “I never wanted to stay where I was put,” adding that “so I would go out all night and find parties.” In her remarks, Heather revealed that she was taken in due to an unstable home life but being taken into protective care didn’t change things for her either. She complained that kids are allowed to come and go as they please because the curfews aren’t enforced. She alleged that there are places with cheap drugs right around the corner, which is within walking distance of a place no one wants to stay.
