The Calgary Police Service has charged a local man in connection with the 2001 homicide of Corinne Rita BELANGER.

A co-worker who was concerned when BELANGER failed to show up for work called police and asked for someone to check on her welfare. BELANGER, 37, was found by police deceased inside her home in the 0-100 block of Templeby Road N.E., on April 16, 2001.

BELANGER, who died as a result of a shooting, had been estranged from her husband at the time. Investigators do not believe he played a role in her homicide.

Barry David BROWN, 50, who was a friend of BELANGER’s estranged husband, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the homicide.

BROWN was arrested around noon on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, by members of the Homicide Unit’s Unsolved Team. The team is assigned cases that are more than two years old. Their work has now led to charges or convictions in three cases since its formation three years ago.

BROWN has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
