Border Service Agency officials have finally released actor Randy Quaid from a Canadian immigration jail after he was arrested last week. According to the officials, the Brokeback Mountain star fled to Canada in 2010 with his wife Evi after they were arrested for illegally squatting at a home in Santa Barbara, California.

Upon arriving in Canada, the Quaids applied for refugee status claiming that they were being persecuted by “Hollywood star whackers.” Since Evi’s father was a Canadian, she was granted Canadian citizenship but Quaid was scheduled to appear for an interview with the Immigration and Refugee Board in 2013. However, he failed to show up for the interview and the officials failed to find the actor. However, Quaid was spotted last Thursday in downtown Montreal and apprehended immediately. He had been living in the city with his wife since February 2013.

After the arrest, Quaid was held at an immigration detention centre until he finally appeared in front of the board on Tuesday. He informed the officials that he was “devastated” after being denied permanent residency in Canada. Quaid stated that “I’d lost faith in the system. I wanted to get into a space where I could have time to investigate. I needed to gather evidence about what happened in Santa Barbara.” He added that “I meant no disrespect to Canadian border services. I have great respect for them, but I didn’t feel that anyone else was willing to listen to me.”
