Members working out of the York Regional Police #1 District Uniform Patrol Unit have charged a 30-year-old man in connection with an incident involving the assault of a York Region Transit Special Constable during a transportation fraud investigation yesterday.

On Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at approximately 9:20 a.m., police were called to Yonge Street and Millard Avenue, in the Town of Newmarket, to assist a Special Constable who had been assaulted on a York Region Transit bus while conducting a transportation fraud investigation. After refusing to identify himself, the suspect assaulted the Special Constable and fled on foot.

After a ground search was conducted involving several units, patrol officers working out of the #1 District Headquarters found the suspect hiding behind a nearby dumpster.

The Special Constable suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident and was transported to hospital where she was treated and released.

CHARGED:

• Hugh WALFALL, 30, of no fixed address

CHARGES:

• Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest
• Obtain Transportation by Fraud.
• Fail to Comply with Probation Order x 3

Mr. WALFALL has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Wednesday, December 22, 2010.
