In his recent remarks in a Canada Day event at Guelph on Thursday, Justin Trudeau stated that the Liberals will win the riding in the upcoming federal election regardless of what the recent polls show. He alleged that “polls go up, polls go down, what matters is the connection we’re building and the better plan we’re offering.” Trudeau stated that “Lloyd (Longfield’s) a great candidate and we’re going to see a continued strong voice for Guelph in Ottawa with the Liberal party.”

Trudeau paid a surprise visit to Guelph’s Riverside Park and remained with the crowd near the main stage for about 20 minutes, shaking hands and posing for photos with supporters and somewhat surprised residents. The riding of Guelph has been a Liberal stronghold since 1993, but it won’t have an incumbent as current MP Frank Valeriote will not run again. Longfield, the former head of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce, is running in his place.

According to a Forum Research poll published on June 18, the NDP led the riding with 34 per cent of voters, whereas the Liberal’s followed with 28 per cent and the Conservatives with 26 per cent support. Upon inquiry about the effect of 2011 robocalls scandal on the upcoming campaign, Trudeau replied that “you know what, the Conservatives have been found guilty of cheating in the past election. That’s not going to matter in this one because people want a change and that’s what we’re going to focus on.”
