The CPS homicide unit has reclassified the death of Aref Selman NASSEREDDINE as a homicide.

On Wednesday, March 17, 2010, NASSEREDDINE, 64, was found by family members in his residence in the 1600 block of 42 Street S.W. He died as the result of stab wounds. Information provided to homicide investigators during the early stages of the investigation from friends and family members led investigators to question the manner of death.

Recent crime lab results identified the presence of DNA at the scene which was instrumental in determining NASSEREDDINE was murdered. Those DNA results combined with additional investigative information have led investigators to believe that more than one person was involved in the victim’s murder. Witnesses described two males in the backyard of the victim’s residence on the morning of his death.

The first male is described as Caucasian, 25 years old, 6’ to 6’4” tall, with a slim build, and short brown hair. This man was wearing a green baseball hat, grey-coloured nylon bomber-style jacket, blue jeans and work boots.

The second man is in his late 20s, has tanned skin, 5’6” tall, with short, dark-brown hair. He was wearing brown sunglasses, blue jeans and work boots.

On the date of his death, NASSEREDDINE was captured on a City of Calgary surveillance camera at 11:15 a.m., in the area of 7 Avenue and 5 Street S.E., talking with two females. Investigators have since identified and interviewed the women and have ruled them out as being involved in his death.

Investigators have not been able to determine why NASSEREDDINE was downtown at that time. One theory is that NASSEREDDINE may have met the people responsible for his murder downtown and he was followed or accompanied home.

NASSEREDDINE is described as Arabic, 5’6” tall, 175 pounds, with balding grey hair. He wore glasses and walked with a cane.
