Winnipeg police officer nearly dragged to his death by drunk driver

On January 1st, 2011 at approximately 4:00 p.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service Division 12 Community Support observed a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner in the area of Keewatin Street and Alexander Avenue.

Officers were able to conduct a traffic stop and determined that the lone male driver appeared to be intoxicated. While speaking to police the driver placed the vehicle in drive. An officer was able to reach inside and take hold of the driver, however, the suspect accelerated forward dragging the officer approximately 10 meters. At this time the vehicle became stuck in a snow
bank and the suspect was arrested. The officer did not sustain any injuries as a result of the incident.

A 31 year old Winnipeg male had been charged with the following offences and detained at the Provincial Remand Centre:

Assault Police Officer
Drive Impaired
Refuse Breath Demand
Drive Disqualified
Public Mischief
Warrant of Arrest x 3
