Conservative Leader Stephen Harper officially inaugurated the marathon election campaign of his party on Sunday by announcing that Canadians will go to the polls on Oct. 19. Harper alleged that the Canadians will have to make a “critical” decision on the future of the country this time.

Mr. Harper crossed the street to Rideau Hall just before 10 a.m. to meet with Governor General David Johnston and ask that Parliament to be formally dissolved. He gave a confirmation after almost twenty minutes and established that 42nd election was underway while laying out his case for re-election to Canadians. He stated that the fall vote will be a test of whether his party can provide leadership on the big issues of the economy and security. Harper pointed out that “a national election is not a popularity contest,” adding that the global economy remains “uncertain and unstable.” He assured that managing the Canadian economy remains the top priority for the Conservatives, while warning that now is not the time for “reckless economic schemes.” He said that “I think our plan has proven itself,” boasting about the Conservatives’ “low-tax plan.”

The Conservatives’ campaign slogan is “Stephen Harper: Proven leadership for a strong Canada.” Admitting that this campaign will be twice the length of recent campaigns, Harper said that the other leaders were already on the campaign trail and because of that, it was necessary to get all the parties operating under the same rules that kick in once the election is underway.
