A 13-year-old air cadet, Gabriel Comeau, passed away on Tuesday after collapsing during a three-week camp at Greenwood Cadet Training Centre in Nova Scotia. A statement issued by Chief Reserves and Cadets on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces confirmed Comeau’s sudden death after he felt ill for a short while.

Bennett mentioned that “I have been told by those close to him that Gabriel loved being a part of Air Cadets and he was so happy when he finally reached the age of 12 that he could sign up and be with his two older brothers to share the experience of Air Cadets together,” adding that “on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces, I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Cadet Comeau as well as his extended cadet family that includes the cadets and staff of the Greenwood Cadet Training Centre and 161 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Saint John.”

The training centre officials revealed that the teen took the day off because he felt ill but soon after he lost consciousness and was rushed to hospital where he died. Commanding officer at the training centre, Lt. Col. John Carter, stated that “our thoughts and prayers are with Cadet Comeau’s family and friends during this time. We are providing the cadet’s family with support directly from our Commanding Officer, an Assisting Officer and Canadian Armed Forces Chaplain.” An investigation into the incident is underway and the funeral will be announced at a later date.
