Fatal Bay Street Shooting Suspect Surrenders Voluntarily

Toronto police has confirmed that the prime suspect allegedly involved in the fatal Bay Street shooting few weeks ago, 25-year-old Mohamud Abdiwal Dirie, surrendered on Saturday morning. According to the police, Dirie was wanted in the death of 27-year-old Kabil Abdulkhadir, who is the victim shot dead in downtown Toronto on Aug. 9. Police claims that the suspect walked into Toronto’s police’s 23 Division detachment to turn himself in voluntarily.

The police account of the incident narrates that Abdulkhadir was among his friends as the shooting took place at around 2:45 a.m., just blocks away from Toronto City Hall and the Eaton Centre. Upon arrival of police a short time later, it pronounced Abdulkhadir dead and failed to find the shooter. The security footage from the area did not help the as much and police sought more detailed witness accounts to solve the crime. Meanwhile, Abdulkhadir’s family made a desperate plea as his sister stated that “my brother wasn’t just like my brother. He was everything to me. Everything” and his younger brother said the family needed “justice.”

In an announcement made on Friday, police revealed to have identified the prime suspect in the case as Dirie as it said they believed Abdulkhadir was targeted because of a “pre-existing dispute.” Moreover, it added that 20-year-old Abdullahi Alifarah has been arrested on charges of being accessory the in case. Police said a third man is wanted for firearms offences, after allegedly shooting at a suspected getaway car. After his voluntary surrender, Dirie will now face first-degree murder charges in Abdulkhadir’s death.
