The BC Wildfire Information office has cautioned the residents of southern B.C. about the smoke coming from the fires south of the border as it believes it is making its way north. The agency mentioned that residents should prepare to see a heavy blanket settle in as early as this evening. The statement issued from BC Wildfire stated that most of this smoke is drifting northward from fires in Washington State.

The statement issued by the BC Wildfire department revealed that “the Stickpin wildfire burning in northern Ferry County, Washington, 4.5 kilometres south of the Canada-United States border is now estimated at 16,830 hectares. The BC Wildfire Service is working closely with fire agency representatives in the United States to coordinate wildfire response for this incident.” A BC Wildfire Service Incident Management Team investigated the northern flanks of the fire today. Consequently, sustained action crews and equipment are set to arrive in Washington tonight and they will help in suppressing the northern flanks of this wildfire tomorrow. At the same time, the Border Services in both countries are also on standby to provide any help required to expedite the deployment of firefighting resources.

Firefighters are conscious that detecting new fires is becoming a challenge due to poor visibility at the time. They mentioned in a statement that “if you spot a wildfire, or a distinct column of smoke, please report it to *5555 (or 1-800-663-5555 on a landline) as soon as possible. The more information we have, the more effective our response will be.”
