The famous six-time Olympic medalist in speed skating and cycling for Canada, Clara Hughes, has made a shocking revelation that she tested positive for the banned substance ephedrine back in 1994. In a media-talk on Sunday night, the 42-year-old confessed to testing positive while discussing her upcoming memoir Open Heart, Open Mind, i.e. set to release on Tuesday.
Hughes stated that “I do know that I didn’t cheat,” adding that “I can look anyone in the eye, and I can look myself in the eye and know that that is my truth.” In addition to her sporting achievements, Hughes has also led the campaign to speak out about depression and other mental illnesses. According to Hughes, she tested positive at the 1994 world cycling championships in Sicily, when she ended at a disappointing fourth place in the time trial after finishing first in the event all year long.
The sporting legend explained that few months after the world championships, Canada’s national team director, Pierre Hutsebaut, informed her the news and inquired about the reasons. She elucidated that “I didn’t know what ephedrine was,” so “I asked him what it was and he said, `it’s a stimulant and it’s found in cough medicine. Did you take any cough medicine or cold medication?’ And I hadn’t… You can’t take anything that’s going to help you get over a cold or a lung infection or pain medication. You can’t take that as an athlete.”
