Police has confirmed the death of a 12-year-old boy and two more people at a massive 20-vehicle crash on the westbound Highway 401 at Brock St. near Ajax on Friday night. With more than 16 others injured, OPP’s highway safety division’s Sgt. Kerry Schmidt stated that “it’s quite a scene down there. Scrap metal everywhere.”

In his remarks, Schmidt explained that the accident initiated when a transport trailer failed to slow down while approaching a construction zone on the highway. He added that the trailer “bulldozed” through several vehicles in front of it. Schmidt mentioned that “vehicles are ripped apart. Some are unrecognizable as vehicles.” The incident resulted in five seriously injured victims who were moved to hospital with critical injuries while eleven more sustained less serious injuries. Three ORNGE air ambulances and three ambulances units were sent by Toronto Paramedic Services in response to the incident.

At the moment, police have closed all four eastbound lanes at Salem Rd. and westbound lanes at Brock St. The incident is being investigated by the OPP and they vowed to clear at least one lane for traffic soon. However, Schmidt reports that even one lane might not open until the early afternoon. Almost two weeks ago on the same Hwy. 401, another fatal crash took place as a transport trailer failed to slow down at a construction site near Harwood Ave. in Ajax. That incident resulted in the death of two people as well.
