The first-year Western University student, 18-year-old Andrea Christidis, struck by a vehicle while walking on campus on Wednesday at 11:35 p.m. has died. The first pedestrian death on campus in 15 years took place on the sidewalk on Lambton Drive near Talbot College when a northbound vehicle hopped the curb and struck her.

According to the witnesses, Christidis was bumped almost 10 meters away from the crash site and in to a nearby indoor tennis court as bystanders looked after her until paramedics arrived. Thereafter, she was shifted to a nearby hospital with critical condition but failed to survive her injuries and passed away on Friday. A student of health sciences, Christidis, lived in residence at Medway-Sydenham Hall, i.e. a short walk from the crash site. The President of the Western University, Amit Chakma, mentioned in a press statement issued on Saturday that “this is a terrible tragedy and Andrea’s death saddens me deeply,” and “I know that I speak for the entire Western community when I say that my heart goes out to her family and friends at this most difficult time.”

The driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, 24-year-old Jared DeJong, has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing bodily harm and having more than 80 mg of alcohol in his blood while driving. In his first court appearance on Thursday, he was granted bail after paying $1,500 and a driving plus drinking ban. Although the charges haven’t been proven in court, there has been a rising call for more strict penalties for culprits of impaired driving.
