In a recent campaign stop, New Democrat Leader Thomas Mulcair arrived at Alma, Que. and set his sight on the riding long-held by Conservative cabinet minister, Denis Lebel. The NDP leader made several announcements while campaigning at the newly reconstituted riding of Lac-Saint-Jean on Thursday morning, where the Conservative’s infrastructure minister is running for re-election.
Lebel is often credited for keeping his former riding from the so-called Orange Wave in 2011, when he secured almost 46 per cent of the vote. However, NDP staffers highlighted a poll conducted by Le Quotidien, which showed their candidate, Gisèle Dallaire, in a close second place. On Thursday morning, Mulcair mentioned in a press statement that his party is fully prepared to take over the personal popularity of Lebel, despite the unpopularity of the Conservatives in Quebec. Addressing the audience at a hotel conference room, he stressed that “it’s not Denis Lebel you need to look at. You must know that it is Stephen Harper who is our target,” adding that “if we want to stop him, we must absolutely defeat Denis Lebel next Monday and also understand the only party that can defeat Stephen Harper here in the region is the New Democratic Party.”
While Mulcair was out aiming at Conservatives strong-hold constituency on Thursday morning, Trudeau was set to campaign in Outremont, i.e. the Montreal riding Mulcair has held since winning a by-election in 2007.
