Nova Scotia government has decided to oust Nova Star Cruises as the operator of the Yarmouth ferry as it moves to hire services of Bay Ferries Ltd. A maritime arrest was issued for the Nova Star ferry, which has operated between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia for the last two years. According to the minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, MacLellan, Bay ferries “came out the very clear and best option through that process”.

A statement issued by the President and CEO of Nova Star, Mark Amundsen, said that Nova Star Cruises is disappointed for not being selected to continue operating the ferry service. However Mr. Amundsen alleged that his company will work with the Province of Nova Scotia toward a smooth transition to the 2016 operating season. Nova Star received over $41.5 million from the province as it worked for the last two years. Usinger said to be anxious to get paid since Nova Star Cruises has no hard assets and leases the ship from a company in Singapore. He said that “we needed a real change in direction.”

Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, Geoff MacLellan, stated that “staff have been in discussions with Bay Ferries Limited and we are now ready to officially enter into negotiations on contract details.” On the other hand, Nova Scotia’s government committed earlier in May that it will spend another $13 million this year on the ferry service. Previously, the service was shut down by the former NDP government when it eliminated the annual subsidy.
