Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reaffirmed his plans to fast-track settlement of 25,000 Syrian refugees this year. Addressing an audience of international leaders at the G20 summit in Antalya, Trudeau highlighted that Canada is “stepping up” to help the millions of people fleeing the region.

The vicious terror attacks in Paris prompted an immediate political shift on the refugee crisis, providing more value to the nations resisting to accept refugees as they now further stricken their views. Meanwhile, Canada’s auspicious Jan. 1 deadline for accommodating 25,000 refugee had also been criticized as the opposition questioned whether the new government has the capability to screen and settle so many people so quickly. However, Mr. Trudeau has remained steadfast on the election promise and reaffirmed it during the leaders’ summit where the official agenda was side-lined by the Paris attacks.

In response to a query by the audience following a speech to business leaders, Mr. Trudeau replied on Sunday morning that “on the Syrian refugee crisis and the refugee crisis writ large, I’m pleased to say that Canada has tremendous examples of having integrated people fleeing for their lives from very difficult situations to become not only citizens but active contributors to Canada’s success.” He stressed that “we will be accepting 25,000 Syrian refugees between now and January 1st and investing and ensuring that we will be empowering and integrating them into success and the paths for success that people around the world are hoping to see.”
