Canada’s newly appointed Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan has entered Canada in the list of countries demanding Syrian President, Bashar Assad, to step down. Sajjan mentioned in his remarks that “I’m of the opinion that President Assad, he does need to go, given the complexity of the problem and the horrible atrocities that have been committed to his own people.”

The Canadian defence minister has reiterated the demand earlier stressed by the U.S. President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande. Apart from these two leaders, several western partners have softened their demand to ask Asad to quit as they remain committed to defeat ISIS. In the beginning of Syrian conflict between Assad and rebel groups in 2011, the West was persistent to make Assad go but now that the Islamic State has made the situation very complicated. Meanwhile on the other hand, Russia and Iran have begun providing support to Assad in his government’s fight against the terror group.

According to Sajjan, Canada’s new Liberal government, like the American government, is not ready to back down on its desire to see Assad go. He highlighted that Canada is trying to keep the “wider picture” in mind and recall that Assad instigated the current conflict in Syria, even as ISIS gains ground in the country. He stressed that “what we’ve got to keep in mind here is how did this whole problem start? That Assad’s regime has killed more of its own people than even Daesh (ISIS) actually has.”
