Nine people arrested in a major opium bust in Toronto

On Wednesday, January 26, 2011, the Toronto Police Drug Squad Major Projects Section, in partnership with York Regional Police, Peel Regional Police and the Canada Border Services Agency, completed a year-long investigation into the importation of opium and other illegal substances into the Greater Toronto Area, dubbed Project Khiar.

It is alleged that:

– police seized 190 kilograms of opium, valued at $13 million, 44 kilograms of Ephedrine, a precursor for producing Crystal Methamphetamine, 44 kilograms of Ephedrine, capable of producing approximately 40 kilograms of Crystal Methamphetamine, valued at $8.8 million.

– police also seized four luxury vehicles.

On Wednesday, January 26, 2011, seven men and two women were arrested and charged.

Fardin Ayati-Ghaffari, 47, of Richmond Hill, has been charged with:

15) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium,
16) Possession of Opium.

Saeid Chegini, 27, of Richmond Hill, has been charged with:
1) Global Conspiracy to Import Opium,
2) Conspiracy to Obstruct Justice,
3) Obstruct Justice,
4) Conspiracy to import a Controlled Substance,
5) Counsel to Commit Indictable Offence of Import a Controlled Substance,
6) Conspiracy to Import Opium,
7) Import Opium,
8) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium,
9) Conspiracy to Import Opium,
10) Import Opium,
11) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium,
12) Conspiracy to import Opium,
13) Import Opium,
14) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium,
15) Conspiracy to Import Opium,
16) Import Opium,
17) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium,
18) Fail to Comply with Recognizance,
19) Conspiracy to Import Opium,
20) Import Opium,
21) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium.

Mansour Chegini, 50, of Richmond Hill, has been charged with:
1) Global Conspiracy to Import Opium,
2) Conspiracy to import Ephederine,
3) Import Ephedrine,
4) Possession for the Purpose of selling or providing Class "A",
5) Conspiracy to import Opium,
6) Import Opium,
7) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium.

Naeim Dehghansai Ghahramanlou, 27, of Richmond Hill, has been charged with:
1) Conspiracy to Import Opium,
2) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium,
3) Import Opium.

Somayyeh Fathollahi-Ghocheh, 26, of Toronto, has been charged with:
1) Fail to Comply with Peace Bond,
2) Conspiracy to Commit Theft,
3) Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking,
4) Possession of Herion for the Purpose of Trafficking.
5) Possession of Opium for the Purpose of Trafficking.

Shahin Azhadi, 38, of Richmond Hill, has been charged with:
1) Conspiracy to Commit Obstruct Justice,
2) Obstruct Justice,
3) Possession for the purpose of Trafficking Methadone.

Mehrdad Barehi, 40, of Toronto, has been charged with:
1) Conspiracy to Import Controlled Substance,
2) Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Marijuana,
3) Possession of Methamphetamine.

Mohsen Rouhani Esfahani, 44, of Toronto, has been charged with:
1) Conspiracy to Commit Theft,
2) Conspiracy to Import a Controlled Substance,
3) Import a Controlled Substance,
4) Conspiracy to Traffic in Controlled Substance,
5) Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking,
6) Possession of Herion for the Purpose for the Trafficking,
7) Possession of Opium for the Purpose of Trafficking.

Crystal Lee Eden, 31, of Toronto, has been charged with:
1) Possession for the Purpose Cannabis.

They were all scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Wednesday, Janaury 26, 2011, room 103, at 10 a.m.

Lakhbir Shokar, 46, of no fixed address, is wanted for:
1) Conspiracy to Import Ephedrine,
2) Import Ephedrine,
3) Possession for the purpose of selling or providing a Class "A".

Mohamed Medhi Sajjadi, 41, of no fixed address, is wanted for:
1) Conspiracy to Import a Controlled Substance,
2) Import a Controlled Substance,
3) Conspiracy to traffic in Controlled Substance.

Jamshid Royan, 41, of no fixed address, is wanted for:
1) Conspiracy to Import Opium,
2) Import Opium,
3) Conspiracy to Traffic Opium.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance with information concerning other people who may have been unwittingly used to receive any shipments of products from Iran.

These people may have been approached by any of the accused to accept a package which, without their knowledge, may have had opium concealed within.
