cbe offers support to students after bobsled tragedyThe staff of CBE held a meeting on Sunday night to grieve and prepare themselves for Monday morning in order to provide the best support possible to the returning students after the deaths of Jordan and Evan Caldwell. The Caldwell twins were killed while attempting an after-hours joyride on the Canada Olympic Park bobsled track on early Saturday.

CBE Area Director, Calvin Davies, mentioned that “I think it’s really important when a devastating tragedy such as this occurs to realize there’s a whole range of responses,” adding that staff have been given scripts and potential responses to help the students deal with a range of emotions. However, Davies pointed out that “we know there’s a tremendous strength and comfort that comes from a sense of community.” Davies confirmed that schools will not be closed on Monday to allow students access to supports like friends, teachers and professional councillors.

School authorities have set up table to create tributes for the twins, which will be given to the Caldwell family. Davies stressed that “it’s important for us to remember the students involved in this event are teenagers,” adding that “they make some decisions about the kind of activities they want to get involved in. Sometimes it can be a bad decision, which can lead to a tragic ending.” He also pointed out that “we need to have our students — as much as possible — think about how that can happen to anyone. It’s not about judging what decisions this group of students made.”
