poll confirms majority canadian satisfied electoral systemA survey conducted by Insights West has found that a majority of Canadians are overall satisfied with the first-past-the-post electoral system and strongly believe that any proposed changes to the system should be only processed through a referendum. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already promised to end first past the post.

The survey revealed that up to 62 per cent of respondents of the poll from across the country are “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” with the current method of selecting our federal representatives. Furthermore, the survey exposed that among those who polled positively in Quebec (71 per cent) and those who voted Conservative (68 per cent) or Liberal (67 per cent) in last year’s election were most likely to be happy with first past the post electoral system. According to the polls in British Columbia, 66 per cent of respondents favoured putting any proposed changes to the public in a referendum, finding that a vote in the House of Commons is not enough. Across the country, a similar percentage (65) agreed with that conclusion.

Vice president for Public Affairs at Insights West, Mario Canseco, mentioned in his remarks that “for all the talk about electoral reform that Canadians have been exposed to over the past few months, the only consensus is on the need to hold a referendum on any proposal that is made.” It was added that “the level of dissatisfaction with the current system is not especially high, and the possible systems that have been discussed currently get mixed reviews.

  1. After weeks of non-stop misinformation from a closely-held corporate-owned mainstream media and the Conservative Party, an internet poll of dubious quality tries to convince Canadians that electoral reform is not the solution to the very real problems that they know exist with their governance.

A proportional voting system will put power back into the hands of Canadians. Those who profit by the corrupt winner-take-all FPTP voting system will do anything they can to retain that power. Canadians will no longer allow them to do so.
