City TV has reported that a 19-year-old autistic man from Barrie is dead and five men, believed to be Canadian, are in police custody after a bar fight at a resort near Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The man has been identified as Jordan Morrison.
A bar at the Grand Paradise Bavaro resort was the scene of the alleged incident. Five men, thought to be Canadian are now in police custody after an altercation which supposedly saw four of them beat the victim to death. An unnamed witness explained one of the five behaved belligerently towards a woman and the Barrie man stepped in to defend her. One of the five hit the Barrie man, knocked him down, kicked him in the face then with three others continued to hit him.
CityNews has spoken with the family who are devastated by the news. Vanessa Morrison, the victim’s cousin is quoted as saying, "It’s just a shock – it really is. He was only 19. He had a whole life ahead of himself. And he had lots of goals he had set for himself. It’s really a tragedy. It is very surreal actually. You never think that something like this would ever happen to your family.”
CityNews also reports receiving the following statement from a Canadian government official:
"Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada is aware of the death of a Canadian citizen in the Dominican Republic. Consular officials at the Canadian Embassy in Santo Domingo and at the Punta Cana Office are working closely with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to the family," it read.
