On Saturday February 5, 2011 at approximately 2 PM, Smithers RCMP received a report of an avalanche that occurred at the Sun Pit / Sun Bowl area of the "Microwave" – a back country area located south west of Telkwa, BC. The avalanche is believed to have been triggered by snowmobile activity and unstable snow conditions.

Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue attended the scene by helicopter and confirmed that one person had been buried in the avalanche and was deceased.

Police are not identifying the deceased local man until all Next of Kin can be notified.

Immediate recovery of the deceased was hampered by the extreme risk of further avalanches in the area.

Further efforts by the Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue and the Smithers RCMP to attend the area on Sunday were delayed by severe weather and heavy snowfall which made access by helicopter impossible.

Teams have been scheduled to attend the scene early tomorrow morning (Monday Feb 7th) to re-assess and to take any steps necessary to make the area safe for search and rescue members.

Further details will be released as they are known.
