The Liberals leader in Manitoba, Rana Bokhari, welcomed bitter sweet results for her provincial campaign that started in much hype but ended in a personal disaster. The Liberals were able to triple the number of seats they won in Tuesday’s election with three seats but Bokhari failed to earn the Fort Rouge seat herself and instead finished third in the riding.

Addressing reporters at the Liberal headquarters at the ALT Hotel, Bokhari confessed that “yeah, it was a tough game,” adding that “we started from nothing and we grew, that’s for sure. But it’s definitely difficult.” She explained that “we were running with zero dollars, a fraction of the resources (of other parties) with a lot of negativity. But we had fantastic candidates, we had fantastic volunteers. We did what we could with what we had, and that’s just it.” The Liberals candidate in Burrows, Cindy Lamoureux, and Kewatinook, Judy Klassen, both defeated NDP cabinet ministers and added to the Liberals’ seat count, while incumbent Jon Gerrard kept his seat as well.

Upon inquiry about whether Bokhari would want to stay on as leader, she replied that “yeah, we’re going to continue working, we’re going to do what we can,” adding that “we all knew this was gonna be tough. Nobody walked into it, I’ve been at it for two years and it’s never been an easy go.” However she later dodged another question about if she planned to indeed stay on as leader, saying that its “not a conversation to have today,” adding that “I want to go celebrate with my candidates and my volunteers.”
