vancouver’s marijuana dispensary, compassion club, to remain openOne of Vancouver’s oldest marijuana dispensaries, Compassion Club Society, has finally received permission from the city’s board of variance to remain open. The board announced its unanimous decision on April 20, allowing the B.C. Compassion Club Society to continue to sell medicinal marijuana. The stores location, i.e. 2995 Commercial Drive, violated one of the city’s zoning bylaws for marijuana businesses that the city passed last June.

Since there were two schools present in 300 meters radius of the store’s location, the application of Compassion Club for a business license was refused by city’s new regulatory framework for dispensaries. Thereafter, the club appealed the decision to the variance board and it was finally heard yesterday. The board granted an exemption from the distance requirements and now the store can proceed to the next step in the licensing process.

One of the club’s founders, Hilary Black, confessed during a telephonic interview that the positive result was not a sure thing. She alleged that “it’s a very big relief” and explained that “on the one hand, I felt quite confident. On the other hand, I was terrified.” Black accepted that Compassion Club violated one of the city’s new bylaws because “there is a school right across the street from us, so there was a very good chance that we wouldn’t have gotten that variance, which would have had such detrimental effects on the members of the club.” Whereas, she also elucidated that “the bylaws wouldn’t have made sense if the oldest, most conservative, really serious medical organization didn’t make it through the system.”
