pq leader pierre karl peladeau resigns from politicsIn a surprise announcement on Monday, Parti Quebecois Leader Pierre Karl Peladeau revealed he will be resigning from his position after spending just one year as the leader of the sovereigntist party. During a news conference in Montreal, Peladeau explained in French that he was forced to make a choice between his family and his political project. He stated that “I chose my family,” adding that “I am making this decision for the well-being of my children.” He stressed that “I must remain an example to them.”

Peladeau also announced to vacate his post as Member of the National Assembly for Saint-Jerome and assured that the party will meet quickly to find an interim leader. He stated that “I will remain a Parti Quebecois militant,” adding that “I am convinced that the future of Quebec and Quebecers will be the independence of our nation.” Peladeau took over the party when it was reduced from leading a minority government to opposition status. During the 2014 election, the PQ slipped to just 30 seats but it easily won a by-election last month in the riding of Chicoutimi.

Being a wealthy businessman who controls the media giant Quebecor, Peladeau surprised many when he announced he was seeking the leadership of the union-friendly PQ. He refused demands to sell his shares in the company, which owns Quebec’s biggest private broadcaster, TVA, and one of its biggest cable and internet companies, Videotron. In a statement issued by Quebecor on Monday, the company stated that it is “taking note of (Peladeau’s) decision to devote himself to his family and (to) extend our friendship and support under the circumstances.”
