Two Rodents, Capybaras, Skip Their Pen in High Park Zoo

Toronto city officials are shocked today about how two capybaras escaped their pen at the High Park Zoo during the act of placing a third capybaras inside the enclosure on Tuesday morning. According to a spokesman from Toronto’s Parks, Forestry, and Recreation department, the two capybaras got out of the pen when two individuals, including staff member and an animal handler, entered to put a third capybara in their outdoor pen.

The latest reports until Tuesday afternoon only revealed that 30 staffers from the parks department and zoo were searching the large park in efforts to find them but there had been no success until then. Meanwhile, Toronto Police also posted a message on Twitter and asked people to be cautious for them if they are visiting the park. The tweet mentioned: “High Park Zoo – 2 Capybara have escaped their pens and are in the park.”

Capybaras are semi-aquatic mammals from Central and South America and they are the world’s largest living rodent. Although some Capybaras can weigh up to 150 pounds, officials have assured that the two in question weigh around 30 pounds each and are the size of small pigs. Parks, Forestry, and Recreation spokesman Megan Price explained that they are “timid” creatures and not at all dangerous. He promised that “once they are rescued, we will obviously be reviewing in detail what happened and if protocols or procedures need to be updated as a result of this — if, in fact, that’s what happened.”
