canadian held in u.a.e. prison for almost 2 yrs, alardi arrives homeA Canadian man detained by the authorities in the United Arab Emirates for almost two years, Salim Alaradi, has finally returned safely to Canada. Alaradi’s flight arrived at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport at around 6:10 p.m. on Monday and he mentioned that “I’m overwhelmed to be home after the last two years,” adding that “I cannot express how I’m feeling. It’s amazing.”

In his remarks, Alaradi extended his gratitude to the UN Human Rights Commission, his family, members of the Canadian government and the lawyers who worked towards freeing him, calling the campaign for his release “unbelievable.” He stated that “I am home today because thousands of people in Canada and the world spoke out,” and repeated that “I’m grateful to each of you.” Explaining how he feels to be back, Alaradi alleged that his main concern is his health. He said that “I will need time to recover and to get medical treatment,” adding that “I am looking forward to settling in Windsor with my family and enjoying a Canadian summer.” In addition to Alaradi, his daughter Marwa also thanked all of those who shared her story and pushed for her father’s release. The family is now on their way home to Windsor, Ont.

Arrested in Dubai in August of 2014, Alaradi spent nearly a year and a half in prison without being charged. Eventually, he was tried on terrorism-related offenses earlier this year but human rights campaigners said the charges were false and that there was no evidence against Alaradi. He was acquitted by a judge on May 31 without explanation, but he had difficulties leaving the country because his name appeared on a no-fly list.
