tony clement to join conservative leadership raceVeteran Conservative MP, Tony Clement, is widely anticipated to join the leadership race and seek the role to lead his party. According to the former cabinet minister, he will be making an “important announcement” with his wife Lynne in Mississauga, Ont., on Tuesday night, about the “future of the Conservative Party of Canada.”

Upon inquiry about whether he is going to announce his leadership bid, Mr. Clement replied that he cannot confirm yet but added that “obviously, I’m going to talk about the future of our party and our country, and I look forward to getting the feedback.” He mentioned that “so far the feedback has been excellent.” Clement has held numerous roles in both the federal and provincial cabinets, including treasury board president and industry minister.

According to the organizers of the event, Mr. Clement was exploring his options for several months as he travelled across the country since the last election. Former political adviser to the Ontario government, John Capobianco, who is also expected to play a central role on Mr. Clement’s campaign, mentioned in his remarks that “he is going to be making a very strong announcement with respect to some of the people that he’s been listening to over the last little while.” According to Capobianco, “he’s been able to deduce from all these conversations something that he thinks might be of value to the party and Canada at large.”
