The Calgary Police Service has laid charges after a man was found in possession of a loaded weapon at the Calgary International Airport.

At approximately 7:50 a.m., on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, CPS officers were called to the airport’s pre-boarding area by Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) screening officers for reports of a weapon discovered during the carry-on baggage x-ray process.

CATSA officers immediately contacted the Service, who arrived at the area and arrested a 41-year-old man. Inside the bag, officers retrieved an unregistered, fully-loaded 9-mm handgun. A second loaded magazine was also found inside the bag.

The man, who is from Medicine Hat, has been charged with unsafe storage handling or transportation of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted or prohibited weapon with ammunition and possession of a weapon at an aerodrome. His name will not be released until he sees a Justice of Peace later today.
