suspect charged after discovery of missing calgary girl’s bodyCalgary police have arrested a 46-year-old suspected, Edward Delten Downey, and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder after finding the body of five-year-old thought-to-be-missing Taliyah Leigh Marsman on Thursday evening. Earlier, Marsman’s mother was found dead on Monday evening. According to the police, the alleged double-murderer from Calgary knew Taliyah and her mother Sara Baillie but it has not been able to establish the suspect’s motive yet.

Investigators explained to have found what they believe to be Taliyah’s body in a rural area east of Calgary around 7:15 p.m. local time. The search began on Monday evening when investigators were called to Ms. Baillie’s basement suite after she did not show up for work. Police found Ms. Baillie dead at the scene but Taliyah was missing. However, CPS now believes Taliyah was killed before police were called to Ms. Baillie’s residence. Inspector Don Coleman mentioned on Thursday evening that “the timeline of events through the investigation would suggest that both events occurred prior to police involvement on Monday,” adding that “we believe that this incident had concluded sometime [Monday] afternoon.” Coleman stated that “by the timeline…there was nothing we could do.”

Insp. Coleman revealed that Mr. Downey will be held in custody until his next court appearance scheduled for July 20. He alleged that Mr. Downey was showing “limited cooperation” with investigators Thursday evening, although previous it was stated that the suspect was uncooperative. Insp. Coleman stated that “at this point, Mr. Downey is our only suspect.”
