7th International Israeli Apartheid Week features Judith Butler, Riham Barghouti and Ali Abunimah

Toronto Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) 2011 announces its programme and participants. Philosopher and author Judith Butler will provide the keynote address on Wednesday March 9, focusing on the academic and cultural boycott movements.

Founding member of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) Riham Barghouti and writer and editor Ali Abunimah will close the week with a panel on the case for Boycotts, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS). Events throughout the week will focus on the specific role of university campuses in upholding Israeli apartheid and the role of campus movements in the struggle against apartheid.

“IAW began on the University of Toronto campus,” says Toronto organizer William Nakhid, “so it is fitting that as the movement gains strength and confidence, we focus on the role of the campus in apartheid and in the BDS movement.”

IAW is a yearly event aimed at raising awareness about Israel’s apartheid policies toward Palestinians and to gather support for the international boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign, which was launched in 2005 by over 170 Palestinian civil society organisations. The demands of this campaign are: full equality for Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel, an end to the occupation and colonisation of all Arab lands, and the protection of Palestinian refugees’ right to return.
