The crown has charged the Calgary cat breeder, 57-year-old Ruth Sogz, with animal cruelty charges after a hoarding incident was reported on April 17. Sogz will now be facing charges for permitting animals to be in distress for keeping 89 Maine Coon cats at a home in West Hillhurst. The senior manager of animal cruelty investigations at the Calgary Humane Society, Brad Nichols, mentioned that “what we saw was a home that was overrun by cats,” adding that “there’s not really a size of a home that can accommodate 89 cats well.”
A tip from the public led the Humane Society peace officers to inspect the home. At the time of inspection, the inspectors found 89 Maine Coons cats that needed to be removed immediately. It was reported that “there’d be an odour of ammonia that’s beyond what would be safe,” adding that “then there’d be the number of cats themselves, and the dirty conditions that would come from that as far as urine and feces.”
Nichols alarmed that most of the cats were infected with communicable diseases and just a third of the cats were able to be treated and adopted by new families. Usually this ratio is even less for hoarding cases because animals are often suffering from medical issues and showing feral behavior. Nichols stated that roughly 60 of the Maine Coons had to be euthanized and “many of them were visibly ill when we took them,” He added that “some that weren’t visibly (sick) to us, who aren’t veterinarians, were identified to be quite sick as well upon intake.”
