ndp to allegedly fight mulcair’s interim leadership after discrete summerAfter the support for the New Democratic Party leader Thomas Mulcair was reduced to record low numbers in recent public surveys, sources claim that Mulcair might not return to the House of Commons later this month as the party’s leader. At the NDP’s national convention in Edmonton last April, Mulcair announced his decision to resign from his leadership role but added that he would remain in the top job on an interim basis until a replacement was chosen next October.

However, reports claim that many party sources are uncomfortable with the interim arrangement and disliked the fact that he kept a low profile over the summer. The NDP leader did not make any public appearance on Canada Day, St-Jean-Baptiste Day and at Pride Toronto. Several sources have claimed that current and former NDP MPs are discussing about giving Mulcair “an ultimatum” to lay out a scenario that would see an attempt to force a resolution when the NDP caucus convenes next week in Montreal.

One MP mentioned that “this thing is coming to a head,” adding that “we will give the guy the honourable way out, if he wants to stay on in the House as a senior statesman. But the captain has to show up, especially when the ship is taking on water.” Another MP commented that “I knew he wouldn’t have the fortitude or disposition to do what leaders need to do during the summer when they are angling to be the next prime minister.”
