Two men arrested for major gold bar fraud, Toronto

On Wednesday, March 2, 2011, police issued a news release regarding a fraud investigation into the purchase of gold bars.

It is reported that:

– between Wednesday, February 9, 2011 and Friday, February 11, 2011 a fraudulently obtained bank draft in the amount of $1,895,751 was used to purchase a quantity of gold bars in Montreal, Quebec,

– included in this purchase were 75 unique 10 oz gold bars manufactured by The Perth Mint in Perth, Australia,

– these gold bars bear the symbol of The Pert Mint, Australia on the front with kangaroos on the back.

It is further reported that:

– on Monday, February 14, 2011, an attempt was made to sell the gold bars in Toronto.

It is alleged that:

– on Monday, February 14, 2011, the accused was in possession of the 10 oz Perth mint gold.

Senthuran Kanapathipillai, 32, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Possession Property Obtained by Crime.

It is also alleged that:

– on Tuesday, February 16, 2011, the second accused attempted to sell a 10 oz Perth mint gold bar to a Toronto Gold company,

– the accused was arrested and the gold bar seized.

Thevarajah Thambipillai, 55, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Possession Property Obtained by Crime.

The public should be aware that further attempts to sell these fraudulently obtained gold bars may be made in the future.

Members of the public working in the jewellery and metal industry are being advised of the possibility that persons may attempt to pass these fraudulently obtained gold bars at their places of business.

The Canadian Bankers Association is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for any public information that leads to the arrest, conviction and recovery of the gold bars.

  1. if i where investigating this crime i would pay close attention to the fact that 75 10oz. gold bars are only worth about 1 million dollars and not 2 million dollars. there appears to be more going on here.

  2. if you conscomment_IDer that the statement says “included in this purchase”… it does not give a complete accounting of the entire purchase.
