toronto criminal lawyer shot in annexA Toronto criminal lawyer, reportedly 66-year-old Randall Barrs, has been shot in the leg in broad daylight by an unidentified suspect in the driveway of his Annex office on Tuesday afternoon. A spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit, Jason Gennaro, explained that a Halton Regional Police plainclothes officer doing surveillance in the area responded and fired shots at the suspect as well. The suspect, who was seated in a silver Honda Civic, was then taken to the hospital along with the victim after the shooting.

According to the law, the SIU has been called to look into the incident that took place at Bedford Rd. near Prince Arthur Ave. at about 3:30 p.m. Both men are currently in serious condition and receiving treatment at the trauma centre. In its course of investigation, the SIU has designated one subject officer and four witness officers to probe the shots fired by the Halton officers.

Barrs long-time colleague and a criminal defence lawyer, Greg Lafontaine, mentioned in his remarks that “for many years now, Randy has defended people facing very serious criminal charges. He wasn’t somebody working out on the periphery.” Lafontaine explained that Barrs was as “a well-known member of the established criminal bar and … always pleasant to deal with.” According to his website “Mr. Barrs is widely recognized as one of the top trial lawyers in the nation and defended over 20 murder cases in his first decade of practice.”
