bomb threat ‘not credible’, p.e.i. schools to reopen tomorrowThe authorities evacuated all schools in P.E.I yesterday, sending more than 19,000 students home in the middle of the day, in response to a significant bomb threat. However, police has now confirmed that the threat seems to be not credible anymore since the law enforcement officials have physically visited every school on the island and conducted physical checks of the facilities. A Royal Canadian Mounted Police press release stated that “the physical checks and investigation confirmed that the schools are now safe for reopening.”

Earlier in the day, police conducted searches of the schools, and teachers were asked to inform RCMP of anything suspicious or out of place. Students were bussed home at approximately 10:30 a.m. (EST).  A senior communications officer with the province’s education, early learning and culture department, Katie MacDonald, confirmed that all schools in the Public Schools Branch will open as usual on Thursday.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Kevin Baillie explained to have received a fax on Wednesday morning that said a bomb would go off in a school sometime later, however it did not specify the school or the time. Therefore, Baillie added, all schools were notified within 10 minutes. In another press conference in the afternoon, Baillie assured that the RCMP is still trying to track down who sent in the threat. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau assured in a press conference that “the situation is under control” and “the RCMP and local police are putting all necessary resources in the situation.” He acknowledged that “the parents affected must be going through a difficult day.”
