chinese premier calls for extradition treaty in ottawa visitIn a first visit by any leader of China to Canada in six years, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang spent the day in Ottawa in efforts to infuse a close relationship between the two countries. Premier Li defended the death penalty as he stressed on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to sign a formal extradition treaty. The visit included announcements to start exploratory talks on free trade, settling the canola dispute and pledges to double trade by 2025.

Despite other things in the agenda, the Chinese visitor was adamant that an extradition treaty needs to be imposed to return fugitives accused of economic crimes. According to Premier Li, more than 40 other countries including France and Australia have already signed such treaties. A joint news conference of the two leaders focused on Premier Li’s strict reply to Canadian critics of an extradition treaty. He mentioned in his remarks on Thursday that the critics are wrongly disparaging China’s justice system as being based on torture, repression and coercion.

He explained that “there shall be no torture including suspects and sentenced people, humanitarian treatment must be applied. This is provided by Chinese law and the judicial and law authorities follow this role very strictly.” Mr. Li said elucidated that he can’t “promise 100 per cent” that the odd police officer could mistreat an accused, but promised that anyone caught doing that would be treated “very seriously.” He warned that if China that “if we abolish the death penalty, innocent people will lose their lives.”
