calgary stampeders’ hicks killed in nightclub shootingThe Calgary Stampeders have confirmed that one of their football player, 23-year-old defensive back Mylan Hicks, was shot and killed on early Sunday morning after an incident at a Calgary nightclub. According to the announcement on the CFL team’s website, Hicks came from Michigan State and was a member of the Stampeders practice roster.

The statement issued on Sunday morning mentioned that “Mylan’s life was taken in act of violence early on Sunday morning.” Stampeders president and general manager, John Hufnagel, mentioned in his remarks that “obviously this is an extremely difficult and upsetting time for the players and staff,” adding that “it’s a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mylan’s family.” Whereas, the president and CEO of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, Ken King, stated that “the loss of this 23-year-old young man at this stage of his life and his career is an unfathomable tragedy,” adding that “our sympathies to Mylan’s family and to the Stampeders family of players, coaches and staff.”

Earlier, Police had confirmed that officers were called to reports of gunshots at a Macleod Trail nightclub at 2:30 am on Sunday. However, the statement refrained from mentioning the victim’s name and only explained that a man in his 20s was found suffering from a gunshot wound upon arrival. Police confirmed that he was transported in life-threatening condition to hospital, where he died. The police later added that a suspect has been taken in custody.
