37-year-old bilingual Saskatchewan MP from Ottawa, Andrew Scheer, is all set to announce his bid for the Conservative leadership on Wednesday. Reports claim that Scheer will be accompanied by his wife, Jill, and some of their five children when he makes his leadership ambitions formal.
Scheer’s spokesman, Hamish Marshall, has mentioned that Scheer will be submitting his candidacy papers with the party prior to making his announcement. He also indicated that several caucus members are also anticipated to be on his side to lend their support when he makes the announcement. Marshall mentioned that “we’re expecting a lot of support from caucus.”
Alberta MP Garnett Genius has publicly announced his support for Scheer because he claims that Scheer can be a “unifying figure” for the party. Genius stated that “he is intelligent, very affable, a well-liked person, well-respected, I think, across party lines,” adding that “one of the most important things obviously, is for our party to remain strong, as a coalition of people with similar but not exactly the same ideas and the support Andrew will have from caucus will reflect, really, the broad range of opinion within our party.” MP Genius added that Scheer “is not afraid of the diversity” that exists in the Conservative tent and will allow different parts of the party to have their say. He claimed that “he is not someone that is trying to divide the party in the context of a leadership race, he is someone who is trying to unite the party through and after the leadership race.”
