The suspect arrested for the murder of Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks, Nelson Tony Lugela, made his first appearance in court today. Lugela has been charged with second-degree murder after being accused of fatally shooting 23-year-old Hicks. During the course of investigation, the authorities detained two other people but they were released soon. Lugela appeared briefly in court on closed circuit TV from the Remand Centre. However, the accused’s family members appeared in media on Friday and publicly supported his innocence.
The suspect’s older sister, Flora informed reporters that she had spoken to her brother over the phone, who’s incarcerated at the Calgary Remand Centre, and explained that “I know my brother very well and if he did it he would tell me.” With tears in her eyes, Flora continued that “I don’t believe he did it – someone out there, he’s the one who did it.” He doesn’t even remember what happened, he was drunk.” Hicks was gunned down last Sunday morning outside the Marquee Beer Market on Macleod Tr. S.
Furthermore, Flora also expressed her sympathies for Hicks’ family and mentioned that “I just want to tell the person who lost their family (member) I’m sorry for their loss.” She pointed out that her accused brother was with a friend at the Marquee when they “got into an argument with the football team.” But the woman said her brother “didn’t care” about the altercation and only wanted to drink.
