thomson reuters to create technology center, 400 jobs in torontoThomson Reuters has announced the expansion of its Canadian operations with a new Toronto technology centre on Friday. According to the announcement, Thomson Reuters hopes to generate up to 400 jobs over the next two years including the jobs that will move here from New York City like Thomson Reuters president and CEO, Jim Smith, and the company’s chief financial officer, Stephane Bello.

In his remarks, Smith vowed to eventually bring up to 1,500 jobs in Toronto and promised that “Canada is not only our home; it is home to an emerging ecosystem of world-class technology talent.” He explained that “we applaud the Canadian federal, provincial and municipal governments for making jobs, innovation and the knowledge economy a top priority and look forward to our role in supporting these initiatives.”

The announcement by the news organization brought Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Kathleen Wynne and Mayor John Tory together at the Bay-Adelaide Centre to mark the occasion. Trudeau alleged that “today’s news is an example of how great things can happen when the public and private spheres work together — for the betterment of Canadian workers and Canadian families.” Whereas, Wynne mentioned that “we are delighted that Thomson Reuters selected Ontario and look forward to even more opportunities like this as we continue to invest in our highly skilled workforce and build up our innovation economy.” At the same time, Toronto Mayor John Tory stated that “more and more businesses like Thomson Reuters are choosing Toronto as the city to expand their footprint, embracing new technologies and new partnerships. It’s good for business and it’s good for our economy.‎”
