The founder of an independent group working to improve relationship between the police and prominent members of the Afro-Caribbean community, 63-year-old Judah Adunbi, was Tasered in the face by officers who mistook him for a wanted man. Adunbi’s neighbor filmed the whole incident that shows him being stopped outside his Bristol home by police.

The video shows police had asked Mr Adunbi his name but he refused and it led to dispute that resulted in him being Tasered in the face by officers who tried to arrest him. According to Mr Adunbi, the incident left him “scared for his life” and he was “terrified” by what happened. He alleged that “when the Taser hit me I thought it had killed me,” adding that “I thought I was dying and I was thinking ‘my children and my grandchildren need me”.

The incident took place outside Mr Adunbi’s home in the Easton area of Bristol on 14 January. The video shows that Mr Adunbi was approached by the officers when he returned from walking his dog. When inquired about his name, he refused to give an answer and explained that he is “not a criminal” and was “just going about my business.” In attempt to arrest him, the police Tasered him. Mr Adunbi recalled that “I collapsed…I was paralysed and she [the police officer] had the audacity to tell me to get up.” He was later taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary and then to Patchway police station, where he was interviewed and charged with a public order offence and assaulting a police officer.
