London's Big Ben Clock towerA parliamentary official has announced on Tuesday, one of the U.K.’s best-known landmarks – Big Ben clock tower is to be renamed in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The announcement follows four days of celebrations earlier this month to mark the 86-year-old Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, only the second to be celebrated by a British monarch.

The clock tower of the Palace of Westminster – known to millions by the name of the bell it houses, will formally be known in future as the Elizabeth Tower.

Commons authorities backed the modification after dozens of politicians added their names to a push by Tory Tobias Ellwood to favor the switch.

A spokesperson has said: “The House of Commons Commission welcomed the proposal to rename the Clock Tower Elizabeth Tower in recognition of HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and will arrange for this decision to be implemented in an appropriate manner in due course.”

The change will provide a neat symmetry as the tower at the west end is named the Victoria Tower – to honour the only other British monarch to complete 60 years on the throne.

The ornate, 96-metre high neo-Gothic tower features four gilded clock faces, and was established in 1859. The tower had taken the name Big Ben from the giant bell inside, which chimes the famous bongs heard around London’s Whitehall government district.

Prime Minister, David Cameron’s quote as told by one of his spokespersons say: “I think it is a fitting tribute to the Queen and the service she has given to our country in this jubilee year,” Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokesman quoted the prime minister as saying.
