Home Secretary Theresa May has said that Olympics security will not be compromised after it has emerged 3,500 extra troops would be required.

The Ministry of Defence is going to provide an extra 3,500 troops to provide security at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. With only 15 days to go until the Olympic Games, comes news that the private firm G4S will not be able to provide enough people for the security duties involved.

Up to 3,500 extra troops are now being drafted in which means that some 17,000 will now be involved in the Olympics.

The Home Secretary Teresa May was called to the Commons this morning to explain to MPs what went wrong in the security recruitment plan.

Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper has told that challenges were expected to be faced since London won the bid to host the Olympic Games but “to be this close to the Olympics raises some very serious questions”.

She has told that the Home Office also has some “pretty hefty questions” to answer as well over why they weren’t aware of this before.

The Games’ organiser, Locog has been responsible for organising the security of venues but it in effect answerable to the home secretary because of her national responsibilities for making sure that the U.K. remains safe.

Martha Kearney has said: “G4S should be bearing the cost rather than the taxpayer.”

The Labour chairman of the Home Affairs select committee, Keith Vaz, called for the Government to wait before making any other deals with G4S after it emerged the firm was unable to provide the number of security guards to provide security.
