The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince PhilipAccording to an announcement made by the Buckingham Palace, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip has been admitted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary as a “precautionary measure” after feeling unwell while on his annual summer break at Balmoral.

The Duke, who is 91, was taken to hospital through road in an ambulance with Queen. Royal aides have told that he was taken ill early this afternoon, but no details have so far been released about his symptoms.

It is the third time he has been hospitalised in the last nine months. He also spent four days in hospital over Christmas, following an operation to clear a blocked heart artery.

In March, Prince Harry said a successful operation had given his grandfather a “new spurt of life”.

Later in June, after braving the elements during the Jubilee boat pageant – marking the Queen’s 60-year reign – Prince Philip was forced to miss several days of festivities after being admitted to hospital.

Since then he has been in apparently good health, joining the Queen at the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics on 27 July, and touring the Olympic Park.

Prince Philip had travelled to Balmoral seeing a number of Olympic events. He also attended the three-day evening at Greenwich Park to watch his granddaughter Zara Phillips win silver in the team competition.

The Duke was last seen at public engagements in Cowes earlier this week. As Admiral and member of the Royal Yacht Squadron, Philip has been taking part in Cowes Week on the Isle of Wight.

On Tuesday, he watched races in the Solent and accompainied Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Major General Martin White, for a lunch on board a yacht.

Earlier this month, he was at the Queen’s side for engagements in Scotland, helping to host a tea party at Balmoral to mark the end of the Jubilee celebrations.

His next public appearance is due with the Queen for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympics on August 29.
