Home Secretary, Theresa MayHome Secretary, Theresa May has announced to split the U.K. Border Agency (UKBA) into two and brought back into the Home Office in an effort to efficiently manage the overwhelming backlog of asylum and immigration cases which will take another 24 years to clear.

Mrs. May has said the U.K. Border Agency’s performance was “still not good enough” and it would be split to end its “closed, secretive and defensive culture”.

The plans are to split the UKBA into two organisations, one to handle immigration and visas, and a separate law enforcement arm. Both the organisations will not have any status as a separate agency, and they will report to ministers as part of the Home Office. Now, a board will be devised to supervise all organisations involved with running the immigration system, comprising immigration policy, the passport service, border force and the two new entities.

Mrs. May has told the House of Commons: “The Agency has been a troubled organisation since it was formed in 2008 and its performance is not good enough.

“In truth the Agency was not set up to absorb the level of mass immigration that we saw under the last Government. This meant the Agency has never had the space to modernise its structures and systems and get on top of its workload.”

Mrs. May has expressed her optimism about the proposed changes and said it would make it easier to cut backlogs and increase the number of illegal immigrants who are deported.

In response to the announcement, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council, Maurice Wren has said that only time will decide whether the proposed measures would positively affect the Home Office work.

Shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper has also claimed that the issues with immigration have got “worse not better” under Mrs. May’s leadership.
